Chapter 28

Present Day

Cooper smiled broadly from his cell as Chael gawked, mouth hanging open, like a simpleton. In Chael's somewhat limited experience smiles did not come easily to the Dark worshiper so he was obviously taking great pleasure in Chael's obvious shock.

"How nice to see you so…" Cooper paused, looking Chael up and down with sneering, sniveling appraisal. "Intact," he said at last, his voice nasally and his tone superior. The memory of the last time he had seen Cooper replaced Chael's stunned silence with righteous fury.

"Yes, it's a pity the good Baron couldn't meet us here for this little reunion," Chael responded bitterly.

"An unfortunate step along the Dark path I'm afraid," Cooper said without a hint of care or remorse. He stepped forward, closer to the bars of his door and made a show of sniffing the air as if the air in the narrow dungeon hall was more foul than in the cell. "Now that is a familiar scent," he crooned wickedly. "If I am not mistaken young Darrik occupies the cell to your right, correct?" Chael glanced to his right unconsciously, all he could see was a warded wall but the gesture confirmed Cooper's suspicion. "Darrik," he called, his voice dropping the mocking tone and turning to true anger. "You very nearly cost my mistress her prize. Your unreliability in this matter as been noted." Cooper spat out every syllable like some rotted morsel of food he was trying to expel from his mouth. Darrik let out his low alien rumble in response.

"And what of your failure," Chael shot back at him. "You failed to capture me in the forest, my dog used your mistress to sharpen his claws, and you stand here now; a captive of the order." Chael let his smug satisfaction ring through his words and mockingly tisked at Cooper's plight. The Dark cultist suddenly smashed his own head into the iron bars of his cell door and glared at Chael, pure hatred burning in his eyes. A narrow line of blood began to trickle from his forehead as he squeezed his face further into the space between the iron columns of the door.

"You should burn in the furthest depths of the Dark for what you did to her!" Cooper practically screamed, crazed hysteria replacing the cold calculation of before. The blood dripping down his face found its way to his mouth and sprayed forth from his cell as he shrieked the words at Chael. But slowly he pulled back from the bars, wiped the blood on his sleeve and inhaled a calming breath. Cooper closed his eyes for several seconds, fighting some internal battle before continuing.

"But," he said with surprising calm after his brief outburst. "She has not ordained your death at this time. Greater work awaits, and your blood must be spent elsewhere." Cooper seemed to say these words more as assurance to himself than in a direct response to him. It was as if he was mentally preparing for some great
